This week, the team from the Export and Investment Promotion Agency of El Salvador (known in Spanish as PROESA) participated in the delivery of the third and final phase of the Bósforo project, which will generate 100 MW of photovoltaic solar energy. The initiative was promoted and developed by the electricity distributor, AES El Salvador, in conjunction with the Corporación Multi Inversiones (CMI in Spanish).

Bósforo is one of the most important projects that have recently been introduced in the country under a new energy approach of renewable sources.

It has 10 plants of 10 MW each, for a total of 100 megawatts (MW) of energy, which constituted an investment of US$160 million.

Enrique Crespo, CEO of CMI Capital, stated that "through 10 generation plants distributed throughout the country, Bósforo will place power generation and distribution points closer to consumers, thus supporting the stability and reliability of the national electricity system, confirming CMI's long-term commitment to the development of El Salvador.”

The project had already two completed phases, the first consists of three plants located in La Union, Pasaquina and El Carmen. And the second, four plants located in Jiquilisco, Sonsonate and two in Santa Ana.

The third phase inaugurated last Tuesday 29, consists of three plants, located in Nejapa, Apopa, and Guazapa, the last being where the project was delivered in its totality by the President of the Republic, Nayib Bukele and authorities of AES and CMI.

"Bósforo represents an important contribution to the solidification of the country's energy security through diversification and it arises thanks to the strategic partner of two leading companies in the region, such as AES and the CMI," said the executive president of AES El Salvador, Abraham Bichara, at the inauguration event.

This last plant came into full operation yesterday, which has approximately 44 thousand polycrystalline photovoltaic modules, three power stations and a substation that is directly connected to the distribution network to bring electricity to approximately 33 thousand homes.

Bósforo is part of a strategy line of AES Corporation, which is one of the largest energy generating companies globally and aims to reduce the intensity of its carbon emissions by 70% of its operations by 2030.

In the same way, it will allow the corporation to continue transforming its portfolio of services to renewable energy generating platforms, energy storage, liquefied natural gas (LNG) and implementing smart and efficient networks.

PROESA cooperated in the streamlining of all the procedures and permits necessary for the operation and implementation of the project, this is a bet that’s transforming the generation of energy at a regional level, through renewable sources, which will contribute greatly to the reinforcement, diversification and sustainability of the energy matrix of El Salvador.
